Why should you service a diesel engine more often than a petrol engine?

Diesel and petrol engines have quite a few differences which requires them to have different service intervals. A petrol engine should be serviced once a year or every 10000kms while a diesel engine should be serviced every 6 months or 5000kms. Here’s why a diesel engine should be serviced more often than a petrol engine:

Oil Changes

Diesel vehicles require frequent oil changes as the oil becomes contaminated quite quickly compared to petrol engines. This also depends on the kind of driving that the engine is experiencing. If the car is only being used for short stop-start journeys, the oil will also be contaminated faster. The oil is important when it comes to circulating around the engine and keeping it lubricated.

Filters

Diesel engines also need regular fuel and air filter changes as the filters get clogged and create a build-up of sludge. Dirty fuel filters can also cause problems when starting or accelerating the vehicle. The recommended filter change is every two services. This can help the diesel engine run efficiently and ensure a lengthy lifespan for your vehicle.

The upkeep of a diesel engine may cost slightly more because of its frequent services but it is worth it when it comes to extending the lifespan of your vehicle.
