How do I know when it is time to replace my timing belt?
A timing belt is a rubber belt that allows the crankshaft and camshaft to move simultaneously in order to keep the valves in your engine running efficiently. It does not last forever, and car owners should frequently check the condition of their timing belt to ensure that it is not damaged.
Lifespan
In older cars, the timing belt could last for about 96,000 kms but in the newer vehicle models the belt can last up to 160,000 kms. It is important to check the recommended replacement mileage for your model of car. Newer timing belts are more reliable than timing chains.
Faulty Belts
Not only do timing belts keep the crankshaft and camshaft synchronised, they also make sure other elements of the vehicle run correctly. These elements include the water tank, oil pump and injection pump. If the water pump is replaced, the timing belt must be removed and so it should be replaced. It is not wise to put a used timing belt back onto the car as it would have already stretched. Though the timing belt does not make as much noise as a chain, if it is damaged you may be able to hear a chattering noise.
Snapped Timing Belts
If the timing belts become too worn out, they may snap. Depending on your vehicle’s engine, a snapped timing belt could either stop your engine from running or it could cause severe damage to the engine. If the engine does not stop running, the valves and pistons will collide causing damage to the engine cover. It is important to make sure your timing belt is in good condition. Any damage will be costly to replace or repair.
